On a paranormal investigation who is liable if someone accidentally falls in the dark? Who is responsible if someone accidentally damages an item? Are guests and reserve members also covered or just the core team? Will the paranormal team be going into areas not often used and open to the public? Do I need to consider this for a one-off event? Do I want people who I hardly know into my home or workplace, who are not considering every eventuality in a responsible way? Does my own insurance policy cover me for such events out of trading hours and in the dark? I've signed a disclaimer and consent form, but is it worth the paper its's written on because can the team afford any costs involved should they arise? Am I personally liable as an individual?
When the Hereford Paranormal Group first formed, laws and guidelines were very different. We were able to just go off and do paranormal investigations on the invitation of owners and managers. Locations own public liability was sufficient, as were consent forms. BUT as most know and accept, laws, insurance policies and guidelines change and it's important that we change and adapt too. The laws, particularly in 2006, started to look for individual and organisations to be liable. You are finding most reputable organisations are now making statements on their websites and documentation similar to " If you are a venue owner PLEASE request sight of the insurance documentation prior to allowing groups into your property. Individual insurance policies are unlikely to cover group activity such as this especially out of public hours and in the dark". For the protection of the location, owners/managers, the general public and for the group itself it is essential. If you are unsure we recommend you check your own liability insurances before proceeding to see if your inventory, building and people involved, including yourself, are covered. You may be, but always best to be safe and do you really want to make the claim on your own policy if you need to?
Even as a non-profit making group, all of the HPG members felt this was important enough to obtain and have donated each year to ensuring everyone's liability is covered.
It is very easy for organisations to obtain this insurance. If other organisations want to contact us to ask questions relating to this matter please feel free to do so. We cant recommend a company due to laws which exist, but we can hopefully point you in the right direction. We have had several locations asking us for the certificate prior to proceeding with a booking.....make sure you are similar! We are always happy to show it on the night of the investigation.
Yet to make a claim, but we will always have it for the protection of the
locations and ALL those involved
in the investigations.
If you are using the H.P.G don't worry as we have got it covered for you.
